Certain dairy products can be a useful addition to real food diets for dogs. The key is to be selective and use only small portions. Some dogs are lactose intolerant so if your dog gets gas, gurgling stomach noises, diarrhoea or vomits after eating a small portion of dairy, it’s not for them.
Cheese: Soft cheeses like natural cottage/farmers cheese and goat cheese are good dolloped on top of a balanced natural food meal. A small piece of cheddar cheese is good for hiding medication in or as a treat, but please don’t overdo it. A 1 to 2 cm cube is all you need.
Yogurt: Good quality, natural yogurts are great for dogs. They provide beneficial bacteria (probiotics) for a healthy digestive system. Do NOT feed yogurt with flavourings, colourings and sweeteners, ideally the sugar content should be less than 5 grams per 100 grams.
