Coconut oil contains MCT’s (Medium Chain Triglycerides) which are effectively metabolized to provide an immediate source of energy for dogs. MCT’s help balance the thyroid which can assist with maintaining healthy body weight and potentially preventing diabetes. Coconut oil can improve a dogs skin and coat, aid digestion and reduce allergic reactions. It boosts the immune system with its antibacterial, antiviral and anti-fungal properties. The wonderful canine nutrition guru, Dr Karen Becker DVM, suggests giving 1 teaspoon per 20kg of canine bodyweight, twice a day. Coconut oil is great used topically for cuts, skin lesions, wounds, hot spots, dry or itchy skin, bites and stings.

Flaxseed oil there is some debate about the benefits of flaxseed oil for dogs. Best quality pasture feed or organic meat is the BEST, preferred source of omega 3’s. Flaxseed oil contains omega 3’s but because it is from a plant it is not as easily absorbed by carnivores. Flaxseed oil may be beneficial in improving skin and coat, also mild allergies and arthritis in dogs. There is also evidence of flaxseed oil reducing intestinal parasites and helping constipation.

Flaxseed oil best compliments a poultry based meal.

CAUTION: Flaxseed oil is very delicate and can go rancid quickly. Always store in the fridge in a dark bottle and do the sniff test before giving to your pooch, if it smells funky/rancid, throw it out.

Hemp oil is a good balance of Omega 3’s and Omega 6’s. At GPFK we add it to some red meat meals as poultry meals are usually already high in polyunsaturated fats and linoleic acid and according to Steve Brown, author of Unlocking the Canine Ancestral Diet (2010) hemp oil is best with red meat based meal and flaxseed oil is a better choice for poultry based meals. Steve recommends adding one teaspoon of hemp oil per 500 grams of food. Hemp oil has shown been shown to help fight cancers, reduce joint inflammation and pain and can improve a dogs skin and coat. Always make sure Hemp oil is stored in the fridge in a dark coloured bottle and check for any signs of the oil going rancid by smelling first. Do not use rancid oil.

Fish oil is best added to your dogs diet by adding the actual fish, such as sardines, mackeral and other wild fish as the minerals contained in the flesh help to metabolize the fats.
